Pattern Cutting Introduction
Date : Saturday 11th September 2021 Time : 10.30 a.m – 12.00 p.m (fully booked)
Date: Wednesday 15th September 2021 Time : 6.00 - 7.30 p.m (fully booked)
Cost : Free
This one-off session will introduce you to the practice of pattern cutting, helping you understand how patterns are made in order to create and reproduce clothing.
It's aimed at students who have no previous understanding of pattern cutting and intends to demystify the subject helping to inform and inspire you to start creating your own patterns.
It's a perfect workshop for anyone who likes the idea of creating their own patterns but aren't quite sure if they are ready to commit to a longer course. You will be introduced to what a block pattern is and how patterns are created and adapted through a variety of methods.
During the session you will learn how to add a seam line to a pattern and by the end of the session you will be inspired and keen to learn more.
This event is free in support of Sustainable Fashion Week, encouraging you to create new clothing and with pre-loved textiles. Places are limited so need to be booked in advance.

Learn how to set up and use a sewing machine in this 1.5 hour one-off session.
During this small group workshop in a you will learn how to wind a bobbin, thread a sewing machine, control and adjust stitching and troubleshoot for stitching/machine faults.
This is a perfect session if you’re a complete beginner or haven’t sewn in a long time and would like a refresher. It’s also a great introduction to sewing If you are thinking about purchasing a sewing machine, considering doing a sewing course, or you may simply have purchased or inherited a sewing machine but don’t know how to use it.

Affordable, sustainable clothing made, sold & worn to help people rise out of homelessness

The Sewing Room at the Island is also hosting a CDUK event during Sustainable Fashion Week on Tuesday 14th September. It starts with a t-shirt… CDUK will tell their story of how and why they are using their ethical fashion brand to contribute to solving homelessness, followed by an interactive workshop where you can help create t-shirt designs guided by a local artist. If you’re keen to make your wardrobe more sustainable and want some inspiration on exciting ways to do so, come along to the upcycling workshop on the 16th September at The Island.
This mini workshop will include discussion, examples of upcycling ideas using unwanted clothing, scrap fabrics, and other discarded materials such as plastics. You will be introduced to various techniques to inspire and inform your own ideas.
Sustainable fashion can be fun and there’s so many ways of turning our rubbish into something better. Not only saving it from landfill but making something special and treasured from it.
If you have any of your own projects you’d like to share – please bring them along.

Having problems setting up or using your sewing machine or overlocker?
Whether you are simply too afraid to get it out of the box or have been using it a while and struggling to find out why your machine isn’t working properly - Come along with your machine to our Sewing Machine Surgery at The Island on Saturday 18th September.
Your machine will be PAT tested to ensure it is safe to use, get a general check-up plus a mini clean and adjust to ensure it is working at its best. You’ll be given guidance on how to oil your machine, solve simple tension issues and threading problems, such as thread snapping and bird nesting of thread. If your machine needs a new part or repair this will be identified and guidance will be given.
Mark from Cathedral Sewing Machines will help you identify and solve technical issues with your machine and Lisa who manages The Sewing Room at The Island will be able to help you set up your machine if needed.
